We were in St. Louis on business and walked over from the Ritz Carlton. Beautifully appointed restaurant, what you would expect in an upscale district like Clayton. We walked in rather late after an evening of sightseeing and there was no problem getting a table on a Tuesday night without a reservation. Service started off rather slow but then picked up and became more attentive as the meal progressed. The food was certainly of a high quality and delicious. We tried the lobster bisque on our waiter's recommendation and it was excellent. The steak we ordered was cooked to perfection- exactly medium rare. We liked the dry rub they used on it which really brought out the juicy flavor of the meat. Overall a very good experience and we would certainly try it again when in town.
My visit to The Capital Grill was to say the least a fun visit, but definitely not cheap. Valet was available in the limited Clayton street parking for $6.50. I passed and chose to park on the streets. Took me about 10 minutes to park. Got to the restaurant door and was immediately embarrassed by my clothes. I was in khakis and a button up with a tie and sweater on. Straight from work. But I was immediately greeted as I entered. I met with my party and was seated shortly there after. As we walked to our table I found others with jeans and things on so I relaxed a bit. The overall atmosphere of the place was like a upscale hip. Lots of wine bottles and they pumped a nice beat into the room through speakers. The service was EXCELLENT. We had a party of ten and 2 servers who by all means handled us flawlessly. I ordered a porterhouse steak, medium. Now this is why they only get 4 stars. That's all I got. $50 and all I got was a steak. That's it. No veggies. No mashed potatoes, let alone a baked one. My steak was medium. It was okay. I've had better for less. But you see that's Clayton for ya. So at the end of the meal we were brought a little bubbly, and when my bill came I found I could pay it online. That was cool it saved me a bit of time. Overall I would say this is a place you go for the experience of fine dining but the food was okay. I tasted some of my aunts mashed potatoes and my sisters lobster Mac and cheese. Neither were appealing to me. I would say try this place if you want to impress but if you just want a nice steak try somewhere else. 4/5
Well, mixed thoughts on Capital Grille. Service was excellent, appetizers and sides were very good... However.... Two in our party ordered steak options. Both of us were disappointed. Two different cuts and preparations, and both were so-so at best. I wouldn't recommend ordering steaks here from our experience. The Tuna my Wife had was excellent, and they have an extensive Gluten Free menu. Beautiful restaurant and friendly bar area.
Our experience at this Capital Grill was less than stellar. We came here because of the great service and food that we've experienced in 5-6 other Capital Grill locations. Everything here was just OK. They need to really clean up their act here or they too will be gone soon. Unfortunately one of the problems in St. Louis that I've noticed, is that the people here really don't care about service, so maybe this won't matter down the road, but the food quality had better improve. Bad service or not, I know this will not be tolerated by the clientele you are trying to attract whether they are on expense accounts or not.
I have never received such genuine customer service. The Clayton location proved to be a phenomenal addition to the affluent area that it is. I am typically someone that will be hesitant to ask for changes to my wine or anything that I may want different in my meal. This was not the case. I felt so comfortable with my waiter, Derek, and Manager, Geoff due to their legitimate care for my pleasure. I could go on about the satisfaction of service I received. The meal was incredible. Everything from the appetizers, entrees, and most dessert was superior. My guest and I continue to talk about the outstanding meal that we had. This 5 star meal was happily paired with the perfect wine selection by Pierre. Pierre knew what our entree was and could not have provided a better pair to the meal. Very impressed. To top it all off; my guest and I visited to bar after our meal. The bar is very elegant and welcoming. The bartender was very friendly and informative. The perfect was to end the evening. I would, and have recommend The Capital Grille to any and every one.
3 stars due to the high cost of the beef and the low quality and taste. I don't mind the expense if the food is outstanding, but this was not the case with the steaks. Will probably give them another try and switch things up.
